Overview

Autologous platelet lysate (APL) is an investigational biologic therapy developed by Hanan Jafar and colleagues at the Cell Therapy Center and the University of Jordan for the treatment of persistent corneal epithelial defects (PED). The product is an autologous preparation derived from the patient's own peripheral blood, which is processed through standardized repeated freeze-thaw cycles to lyse platelets. This process releases a high concentration of endogenous growth factors, cytokines, and other bioactive molecules, including epidermal growth factor (EGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). When applied topically as eye drops, these factors promote corneal re-epithelialization by stimulating the proliferation and migration of corneal epithelial cells, particularly in patients who are unresponsive to conventional therapies.
