Autologous platelet-poor plasma (PPP) is a blood-derived biologic product prepared from a patient's own blood through centrifugation, resulting in a plasma fraction with a significantly reduced platelet concentration compared to platelet-rich plasma (PRP). It is being investigated by the Fundación Canaria de Investigación y Salud (FUNCIS) in Phase 2 clinical trials in Spain for the prevention of bronchopleural fistula (BPF) following lung resection surgeries, such as pneumonectomy. The product is applied locally to the bronchial stump during surgery to enhance tissue repair and wound healing. PPP contains high concentrations of fibrinogen and other clotting factors, as well as various growth factors that support the healing process and provide a biological scaffold to reduce the risk of post-operative complications. As an autologous preparation, it minimizes the risk of immune rejection or adverse reactions.
