Overview

Autologous platelet rich gel is a biologic product prepared from a patient's own blood. It is created by collecting peripheral blood and processing it (typically via centrifugation) to concentrate platelets within the plasma. The resulting preparation contains a high concentration of platelets suspended in plasma and is then activated (commonly with calcium and thrombin) to form a gel that can be applied topically or injected into tissues. Platelets are key mediators of hemostasis but also serve as reservoirs for numerous growth factors—including transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)—which are released upon activation. These molecules stimulate cell proliferation, differentiation, angiogenesis, extracellular matrix formation, and modulate inflammation to accelerate tissue repair and wound healing. Autologous platelet rich gel has been used primarily for chronic wound management (such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, pressure injuries), surgical wounds, soft tissue injuries in orthopedics/sports medicine settings, dermatological rejuvenation procedures including hair loss treatment and skin aging interventions[1][3][5][7][8]. As an autologous product derived from the patient’s own blood with minimal manipulation at point-of-care or clinical laboratory settings using approved medical devices[6][7], it carries low risk of immunogenicity or disease transmission.
