Autologous platelet-rich plasma (APRP) is an investigational biological therapy being developed by Mahidol University for the treatment of moderate to severe dry eye disease (DED). Prepared from the patient's own blood, this 100% undiluted formulation contains a high concentration of platelets that release essential epitheliotrophic factors, including epidermal growth factor (EGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β). These factors are intended to promote ocular surface healing, reduce inflammation, and provide a biochemical substitute for natural tears. The therapy is currently being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials (notably NCT04683796) at Ramathibodi Hospital, where it is compared against autologous serum eye drops to establish its efficacy and safety in patients with severe ocular surface disease.
