autologous platelet-rich plasma (Vissum)

Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) eye drops, specifically the formulation developed by Vissum, Instituto Oftalmológico de Alicante (often referred to as E-PRP), is a biologic therapy for the treatment of chronic dry eye disease and post-LASIK ocular surface syndrome. Prepared from the patient's own peripheral blood, this autologous treatment is preservative-free and contains a high concentration of platelets. Upon activation, these platelets release a variety of essential growth factors and cytokines, including Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-β), Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF), and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). These components work synergistically to promote corneal epithelial cell proliferation, migration, and wound healing, while also providing anti-inflammatory effects. Clinical studies at Vissum have demonstrated that E-PRP significantly improves clinical signs and symptoms in patients with moderate to severe chronic dry eye, including those with persistent symptoms following refractive surgery.
