Overview

Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated preparation of platelets derived from a patient's own blood, containing a high density of growth factors and cytokines. These include platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and epidermal growth factor (EGF), which are released upon platelet activation. In the clinical trial conducted by Yantai Yuhuangding Hospital, PRP is administered via intra-articular injection for the treatment of severe knee osteoarthritis. The therapy aims to modulate the intra-articular inflammatory environment, promote tissue repair, and alleviate pain by stimulating cellular proliferation and angiogenesis. In this specific study context, it is evaluated both as a standalone treatment and as a scaffold for autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs).
