Overview
Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combined with Spongostan is an investigational biologic-device combination used intraoperatively during tympanoplasty. PRP is a concentrated source of autologous platelets and growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which promote tissue regeneration and wound healing. Spongostan, an absorbable gelatin sponge manufactured by Ethicon (Johnson & Johnson), acts as a resorbable scaffold to deliver the PRP to the surgical site and stabilize the graft. This combination is primarily studied for improving graft success rates and audiological outcomes in patients with chronic otitis media and tympanic membrane perforation.
