Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) eye drops are a blood-derived biologic therapy developed by the University Health Network, Toronto, for the treatment of moderate to severe ocular surface disease and refractory dry eye syndrome. The therapy is prepared by centrifuging a patient's own whole blood using the Eclipse PRP Platelet Preparation System to obtain a concentrate of platelets that is 1.5 to 8 times higher than in whole blood. These concentrated platelets release essential growth factors (such as TGF-β, PDGF, and EGF) and anti-inflammatory cytokines that promote the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells while reducing ocular surface inflammation. It is typically administered as a monotherapy for patients who have failed conventional treatments, including those with Sjögren's syndrome, meibomian gland dysfunction, or post-LASIK ocular surface syndrome.
