Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) eye drops are a biologic therapy derived from a patient's own peripheral blood, currently being evaluated by Assiut University for the treatment of persistent corneal epithelial defects and dry eye disease. The preparation involves centrifuging whole blood to obtain a concentrated platelet fraction, which is then diluted for ophthalmic use. PRP contains a high concentration of epitheliotrophic growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and epidermal growth factor (EGF). These factors promote the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of corneal epithelial cells, facilitating wound healing and the regeneration of the ocular surface in various pathological conditions.
