Overview

Autologous platelet transfusion is an investigational cellular therapy approach being evaluated by Bloodworks Northwest Research Institute for the management of hemorrhage and the reversal of platelet dysfunction, particularly that induced by dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). The procedure involves the collection of a patient's own platelets via apheresis, which are then stored under specific conditions—either standard room temperature (20-24°C) or cold storage (4°C). Cold-stored platelets (CSPs) are of particular interest as they may be stored for longer periods (up to 14 days) and have been shown to exhibit enhanced procoagulant activity and increased thrombin generation compared to room-temperature-stored platelets. This therapy aims to rapidly restore hemostatic function in patients taking antiplatelet medications like aspirin and clopidogrel who require urgent surgery or experience acute bleeding.
