Overview

Autologous protein solution is a blood-derived orthobiologic intended primarily for the treatment of osteoarthritis and some musculoskeletal injuries. The therapy involves withdrawing a small volume of the patient’s own blood, processing it through a two-step device system that separates and concentrates white blood cells, platelets, and plasma proteins—especially anti-inflammatory cytokines and anabolic growth factors. Key components include interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors (sTNF-RI, sTNF-RII), which antagonize pro-inflammatory cytokines that drive cartilage degeneration. The resulting solution is re-injected directly into the affected joint. The main mechanism is local anti-inflammatory and tissue-protective action, aiming to reduce pain, improve function, and potentially slow disease progression in early to moderate osteoarthritis. Clinical and preclinical studies report that APS can reduce inflammation, inhibit catabolic signaling in cartilage, improve patient symptoms, and preserve cartilage structure, though efficacy is strongest in less advanced osteoarthritis[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
