Overview

Autologous pure platelet-rich plasma (P-PRP) is a biologic therapy prepared from a patient's own peripheral blood through centrifugation to concentrate platelets while specifically depleting leukocytes (white blood cells). Developed and studied by the Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, this specific formulation is being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of chronic tendon injuries, including rotator cuff tears, lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), and Achilles tendinitis. The therapeutic mechanism involves the local injection of concentrated platelets into the damaged tendon, where they undergo activation and release a variety of growth factors—such as PDGF, TGF-β, and VEGF—from their alpha-granules. These factors stimulate cellular processes essential for tissue regeneration, including fibroblast proliferation, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis, thereby promoting the healing of tendons that have failed conservative treatment.
