Overview

The autologous renal cell vaccine based on DNP modified cells is an investigational, patient-specific cancer immunotherapy developed by the Hadassah Medical Organization. The vaccine is prepared by resecting primary or metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) tumor tissue from the patient, deriving autologous tumor cell lines, and chemically conjugating these cells with dinitrophenyl (DNP). DNP acts as a hapten to enhance the immunogenicity of tumor-associated antigens, rendering them more recognizable to the immune system. Typically administered with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) as an adjuvant, the vaccine is designed to stimulate a T-cell-mediated anti-tumor immune response. It has been evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials (e.g., NCT00890110) for the treatment of Stage 4 (metastatic) renal cell carcinoma, often in combination with tyrosine kinase inhibitors like sunitinib.
