Overview

Autologous repairing airway epithelial cells are an investigational cell therapy product developed by Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, primarily for the treatment of interstitial lung disease (ILD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The therapy involves the isolation of a patient's own lung stem cells, specifically p63+ KRT5+ basal cells, from the airway via a small biopsy. These cells are then expanded ex vivo to reach therapeutic quantities and delivered back into the patient's lungs through bronchoscopic transplantation. Once engrafted, these stem cells differentiate into various types of functional airway and alveolar epithelial cells, facilitating the regeneration of damaged lung tissue and the restoration of respiratory function. This approach aims to address the underlying tissue loss in fibrotic and obstructive lung diseases, offering a potential regenerative alternative to conventional palliative treatments.
