Overview

Autologous retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell suspension is a cell therapy used to treat advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and foveal choroidal neovascularization (fCNV). The procedure involves harvesting healthy RPE cells from the patient's own peripheral retina, preparing them into a suspension, and transplanting them into the subretinal space following the surgical excision of neovascular membranes. This approach aims to restore the metabolic and structural support provided by the RPE to the overlying photoreceptors, which is often lost in degenerative retinal diseases. Clinical studies have demonstrated that patients receiving this autologous transplantation achieve significantly better reading acuity and higher multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) response densities compared to those undergoing membrane excision alone, suggesting that the transplanted cells can successfully integrate and function within the macular region.
