Autologous salivary gland stem cells are an experimental cell therapy developed by the Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG) for the treatment of xerostomia (dry mouth) and salivary gland hypofunction, typically resulting from radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. The procedure involves harvesting a small biopsy of the patient's salivary gland tissue prior to radiation treatment. Stem and progenitor cells (often characterized by markers like c-Kit or CD117) are isolated, expanded in vitro, and subsequently transplanted back into the patient's damaged salivary glands. The mechanism of action relies on the ability of these stem cells to differentiate into functional acinar cells and provide paracrine support, thereby regenerating the secretory tissue and restoring saliva production.
