Overview

Autologous serum eye drops are an investigational biologic therapy prepared from a patient's own peripheral blood. The serum is separated from the cellular components and typically diluted to concentrations of 20% or 50% using sterile saline or a balanced salt solution. This treatment is designed to mimic the biochemical properties of natural tears, providing essential components that are often deficient in severe dry eye syndrome, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), fibronectin, vitamin A, and various cytokines. These factors promote corneal epithelial cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation, thereby enhancing ocular surface healing and stability. The Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile is specifically evaluating the comparative efficacy and safety of 20% versus 50% concentrations in a Phase 3 clinical trial for patients with severe dry eye syndrome.
