Autologous serum + balanced salt solution is a patient-derived biologic preparation used as ophthalmic drops for the treatment of persistent corneal epithelial defects (PEDs). It is produced by centrifuging the patient's own blood to isolate serum, which is then diluted with a sterile balanced salt solution (BSS), typically to a 20% concentration. The serum contains essential bioactive components, including epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), fibronectin, and vitamin A, which mimic the biochemical properties of natural tears and promote corneal epithelial cell migration, proliferation, and wound healing. Because it is autologous, it minimizes the risk of immunological rejection or preservative-induced toxicity.
