Overview

Autologous serum artificial tears are personalized ophthalmic solutions made from a patient's own blood. After blood is drawn and allowed to clot, the serum is separated by centrifugation and diluted with a sterile, preservative-free solution (commonly saline) to create eye drops that closely mimic the biochemical composition of natural human tears[3][4][5]. These drops contain growth factors, vitamins (such as vitamin A), albumin (with antioxidant properties), fibronectin, lysozyme, transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), and other nutrients essential for ocular surface health[1][4][5]. The mechanism of action involves mimicking natural basal tear biochemistry to promote healing of the ocular surface epithelium and reduce inflammation[6]. Autologous serum artificial tears are primarily used for moderate-to-severe dry eye disease unresponsive to conventional therapies but are also indicated in severe ocular surface disorders such as Sjögren's syndrome-related tear deficiency, graft-versus-host disease-associated dry eye, neurotrophic keratitis, persistent epithelial defects (PED), Stevens-Johnson syndrome, chemical injuries/burns of the cornea/conjunctiva[1][4][9]. They have been shown in studies to improve tear production/stability and support corneal healing. Because they are derived from the patient’s own blood (“autologous”), risk of allergic reaction is minimized.
