Overview

Autologous serum eye drops (ASEDs) are a blood-derived therapeutic used for the treatment of severe ocular surface diseases, such as persistent corneal epithelial defects (PEDs). The product is prepared by centrifuging a patient's own peripheral blood to separate the serum, which is then typically diluted to a 20% concentration with sterile saline. This serum contains a complex mixture of growth factors (including epidermal growth factor and transforming growth factor-beta), vitamins, fibronectin, and anti-inflammatory cytokines that mimic the biochemical properties of natural tears. These components promote corneal epithelial cell proliferation, migration, and adhesion, facilitating the healing of recalcitrant defects. E-DA Hospital has specifically evaluated the efficacy of 20% autologous serum eye drops when used in combination with silicone-hydrogel contact lenses to treat persistent epithelial defects and reduce recurrence rates.
