Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Autologous serum eye drops (ASED) are a biologic therapy prepared from a patient's own peripheral blood, designed to treat severe ocular surface disorders. The serum serves as a tear substitute, containing high concentrations of epitheliotrophic factors such as epidermal growth factor (EGF), fibroblast growth factor, fibronectin, and vitamin A, which are essential for corneal epithelial health. This specific 20% concentration is being investigated in a Phase 2 pilot trial (NCT07014059) sponsored by Giancarlo Fatobene, which utilizes a closed-circuit collection system to improve accessibility and maintain sterility. The therapy is targeted at chronic conditions including dry eye syndrome, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and neurotrophic keratitis, providing anti-inflammatory and regenerative support to the ocular surface.
