Overview

Autologous serum ocular insert (ASOI) is a novel bilayer biologic drug delivery system designed for the treatment of chronic dry eye disease and other ocular surface disorders. The insert consists of a carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) backing layer and an active layer containing the patient's own blood serum. This autologous serum provides essential epitheliotrophic growth factors (such as EGF, TGF-beta, and NGF) and proteins naturally found in tears, which promote corneal epithelial healing and protect the ocular surface from oxidative stress. Designed to be placed in the inferior fornix of the eye, the ASOI offers a sustained-release profile that significantly reduces dosing frequency compared to traditional autologous serum eye drops, which typically require administration every 2-3 hours. This formulation addresses common challenges associated with liquid serum drops, including poor stability and demanding storage requirements.
