Autologous skeletal muscle-derived cells are cells isolated from a patient's own skeletal muscle tissue and expanded ex vivo for therapeutic use. These cells are predominantly myogenic, often enriched for stem cell and progenitor content, and used in regenerative cell therapy approaches. Their mechanisms center on engraftment, fusion with host muscle fibers, and differentiation into myocytes, thereby augmenting tissue structure and function. This therapy is being clinically investigated for conditions such as stress urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, swallowing impairment, muscular dystrophies, and tissue engineering for musculoskeletal repair. For some indications, cells may be genetically engineered (e.g., to express dystrophin) prior to transplantation[1][3].
