Overview

Autologous skeletal myoblast cell therapy is a regenerative medicine approach developed by Advanced Cell Technology (following its acquisition of Mytogen) for the treatment of heart failure, specifically ischemic cardiomyopathy. The therapy involves harvesting a small biopsy of skeletal muscle from the patient's leg, from which skeletal myoblasts (adult progenitor cells) are isolated and expanded in vitro over a period of two to three weeks. Hundreds of millions of these expanded cells are then transplanted back into the patient's scarred heart tissue via a 3D-guided, catheter-based procedure. The mechanism of action involves the integration of these myoblasts into the damaged myocardium to potentially repair or replace non-functional tissue and improve overall cardiac function and output.
