Autologous skin cell suspension is a regenerative medicine therapy used to treat thermal burn injuries, stable vitiligo, and full-thickness skin defects. Developed by Avita Medical, the system involves harvesting a small sample of the patient's own skin, which is then enzymatically and mechanically processed at the point of care using the RECELL Kit to create a suspension of primary skin cells, including keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and melanocytes. This suspension is sprayed or dripped onto the wound bed, where the cells proliferate and differentiate to restore the skin's barrier function and pigmentation. This approach significantly reduces the amount of donor skin required compared to traditional meshed autografting, leading to improved healing outcomes, reduced donor site morbidity, and enhanced aesthetic results.
