Autologous skin cell suspension (marketed as ReCell) is a point-of-care regenerative cell therapy developed by Avita Medical for the treatment of severe acute burns, vitiligo, and other skin defects. The system utilizes a small split-thickness skin biopsy from the patient, which is enzymatically and mechanically processed at the bedside to create a suspension containing keratinocytes, melanocytes, fibroblasts, and Langerhans cells harvested from the epidermal-dermal junction. This suspension is then applied directly to the wound site, typically via spray, where the cells proliferate and differentiate to promote rapid re-epithelialization and skin regeneration. By utilizing the patient's own cells, the therapy significantly reduces the need for extensive donor skin grafting and improves long-term aesthetic and functional outcomes.
