This autologous tissue-engineered skin substitute is an advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) developed by the Andalusian Network for Design and Translation of Advanced Therapies. It consists of a bilayered structure where autologous fibroblasts are embedded in a scaffold composed of human fibrin and hyaluronic acid, acting as a dermal equivalent, while autologous keratinocytes are cultured on the surface to form an epidermal layer. The product is specifically designed for the reconstruction of skin defects, particularly those resulting from Mohs micrographic surgery for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma. By providing a functional cellular environment and a biocompatible matrix, it promotes wound healing, reduces scarring, and facilitates the regeneration of the skin's natural architecture without the risk of immune rejection associated with allogeneic grafts.
