This autologous cell therapy consists of keratinocytes harvested from a patient's own skin, expanded ex vivo in a laboratory setting, and subsequently transplanted back onto the patient. Developed by the Red Andaluza de Diseño y Traslación de Terapias Avanzadas (Fundación Pública Andaluza Progreso y Salud), it is primarily indicated for the reconstruction of skin defects following Mohs micrographic surgery for basal cell carcinoma. The therapy functions by providing a high density of viable, proliferative keratinocytes directly to the surgical site, thereby accelerating re-epithelialization, promoting wound healing, and potentially improving cosmetic and functional outcomes compared to traditional healing methods such as secondary intention or skin grafting.
