Overview

Autologous stem cell-derived islets are an investigational cell therapy designed to treat type 1 diabetes mellitus by restoring endogenous insulin production. The therapy involves generating pluripotent stem cells from a patient's own tissues (such as adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells) and differentiating them into functional, insulin-producing islet-like clusters. A specific approach utilizes chemically induced pluripotent stem cells (CiPSCs), which are reprogrammed using small-molecule chemicals rather than genetic factors, potentially enhancing safety and scalability. Because the cells are autologous (derived from the patient), the therapy aims to achieve sustained glycemic control and insulin independence without the requirement for lifelong immunosuppression. Clinical data from early-phase trials have demonstrated the ability of these transplanted cells to achieve insulin independence and maintain stable blood glucose levels.
