Overview

Autologous stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is a heterogeneous cell population derived from adipose tissue, containing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), endothelial progenitor cells, and various immune cells. In the clinical program led by Shane A. Shapiro at the Mayo Clinic, SVF is harvested from the patient's own adipose tissue (typically via liposuction from the abdomen or hips) and subsequently injected into scarred vocal folds. The therapeutic mechanism relies on the regenerative potential of the MSCs and other cells within the SVF, which are thought to modulate the local inflammatory environment, promote angiogenesis, and stimulate the remodeling of the extracellular matrix to restore vocal fold elasticity and function. This specific application is being evaluated in a Phase 1 pilot study to assess safety and feasibility in adults with vocal fold scarring.
