Autologous tendon-derived progenitor cells (TDPCs) are a specialized population of resident stem cells isolated from an individual's own tendon tissue and expanded *in vitro* for therapeutic use. These cells exhibit mesenchymal stem cell-like properties, including self-renewal and tenogenic differentiation potential. In clinical and veterinary research, particularly for treating equine flexor tendinitis, TDPCs are injected directly into tendon lesions to facilitate functional tissue repair. The therapeutic mechanism involves the cells' ability to organize the extracellular matrix, specifically by improving collagen fiber alignment and increasing the tensile strength of the repair tissue. Unlike natural healing, which often results in disorganized, weaker scar tissue, TDPC treatment aims to restore the biomechanical integrity of the tendon to levels comparable to healthy tissue.
