Overview

Autologous tenocytes (specifically the product Ortho-ATI) is a regenerative cell therapy developed by Orthocell Limited for the treatment of chronic degenerate tendons and ligaments. The therapeutic process involves harvesting a small biopsy of healthy tendon tissue from the patient, which is then processed in a specialized laboratory to isolate and expand the tenocytes (tendon cells). These expanded cells are subsequently re-injected into the site of the patient's tendon injury under ultrasound guidance. The therapy is designed to address the underlying pathology of tendinopathy by stimulating the production of high-quality Type I collagen and restoring the structural integrity of the tendon matrix. Ortho-ATI is commercial-stage in Australia and New Zealand, where it is used for indications such as lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) and Achilles tendinopathy, and has been evaluated in clinical collaborations for rotator cuff injuries.
