Overview

Autologous thymic-derived regulatory T cells (thyTregs) are an investigational autologous cell therapy developed by the Fundación para la Investigación Biomédica del Hospital Gregorio Marañón. This therapy involves the isolation of regulatory T cells (Tregs) from the patient's own thymus tissue, which is typically removed and discarded during pediatric cardiac surgery. These cells are expanded ex vivo and subsequently re-infused into the patient. The primary mechanism of action is the induction of immune tolerance by suppressing the activation and proliferation of alloreactive effector T cells that would otherwise mediate organ rejection. The therapy is specifically being developed as a prophylaxis for heart transplant rejection in pediatric patients, with the goal of reducing or eliminating the long-term requirement for systemic immunosuppressive medications.
