This autologous tolerogenic dendritic cell therapy is an investigational biologic being developed by the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for the treatment of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus. The therapy involves collecting a patient's own dendritic cells and modifying them ex vivo to induce a tolerogenic, immunosuppressive phenotype. This process includes treatment with Vitamin D3, co-cultivation with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and priming with specific peptides. When administered back to the patient via subcutaneous injection, these 'MSC-tolDCs' are designed to suppress the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells, thereby preserving endogenous insulin production as measured by C-peptide secretion. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1/2 clinical trial to assess safety, feasibility, and its impact on stimulated C-peptide levels.
