This autologous cell therapy consists of tolerogenic dendritic cells (DC regs) engineered to downregulate the costimulatory molecules CD40, CD80, and CD86. Developed by Nick Giannoukakis, PhD, and DiaVacs, the therapy utilizes antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (AS-ODNs) to modify the dendritic cells, inducing a state of antigen-specific immunomodulation. While the platform was originally designed to treat autoimmune conditions like Type 1 Diabetes by suppressing the immune attack on pancreatic beta cells, it is being investigated as a treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection to modulate the inflammatory response. The candidate is currently in preclinical development for COVID-19.
