The autologous tumor cell vaccine developed by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for follicular lymphoma is an investigational immunotherapy consisting of membrane-patched proteoliposomes. This formulation is created by extracting membrane proteins from a patient's own (autologous) follicular lymphoma cells and incorporating them into liposomes along with interleukin-2 (IL-2/aldesleukin). The vaccine is designed to present a comprehensive profile of patient-specific tumor antigens to the immune system while utilizing IL-2 as a potent adjuvant to stimulate T-cell proliferation and activation. This approach aims to bypass the need for identifying specific idiotype proteins by using the entire tumor membrane proteome. It has been studied in Phase I clinical trials for patients with advanced or recurrent follicular lymphoma to assess safety and the induction of anti-tumor immune responses.
