Overview

This investigational combination therapy, developed by the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, consists of an autologous tumor-pulsed dendritic cell vaccine and interleukin-2 (IL-2). The treatment involves harvesting a patient's own dendritic cells and exposing them in a laboratory to dead fragments (antigens) of the patient's specific tumor cells. These 'pulsed' dendritic cells are then re-injected into the patient to act as a vaccine, presenting tumor antigens to the immune system to sensitize and activate T-lymphocytes against the cancer. Interleukin-2 is administered concurrently as a cytokine adjuvant to enhance the activation, proliferation, and survival of these tumor-reactive T-cells. This approach is specifically being evaluated for its efficacy and safety in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.
