Autologous umbilical cord blood is an investigational cell-based therapy being developed by Guangdong Women and Children Hospital in collaboration with the Guangdong Cord Blood Bank for the treatment of cerebral palsy in children. The therapy involves the intravenous infusion of the patient's own umbilical cord blood, which contains a diverse population of stem and progenitor cells, including hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). The proposed mechanism of action involves paracrine signaling, where the infused cells release trophic factors that modulate inflammation, promote neuroprotection, and enhance brain connectivity and motor function. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials to assess safety and efficacy compared to placebo.
