Autologous umbilical cord blood (UCB) cells are an experimental cell therapy being investigated for the treatment of neonates with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Developed by researchers at Duke University, the therapy involves the collection and subsequent intravenous infusion of the patient's own volume-reduced cord blood cells. The therapeutic rationale is based on the potential for UCB cells to mitigate neural and cardiac injury through paracrine and anti-inflammatory effects. Specifically, the infusion is intended to lessen neural injury common in HLHS patients and enhance cardiac function by minimizing scar formation and reversing detrimental remodeling following surgical intervention.
