Overview

Autologous umbilical cord blood nucleated cells is an investigational cell therapy being developed by the **StemCell Institute** (Japan) for the treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders, primarily **Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)**. The therapy utilizes the total nucleated cell (TNC) fraction of a patient's own umbilical cord blood, which is collected at birth and cryopreserved in a cord blood bank. This cell population includes hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, regulatory T cells, and other progenitor cells. When administered intravenously, these cells are hypothesized to exert therapeutic effects through paracrine signaling and immunomodulation, specifically by reducing neuroinflammation and promoting neural connectivity and repair in the brain. A Phase 2 clinical trial (jRCTb050240170) is currently evaluating the safety and efficacy of this treatment in children with ASD.
