Autologous umbilical cord blood red cell concentrate is an investigational biologic consisting of red blood cells (RBCs) harvested from a premature infant's own umbilical cord blood at delivery. Developed by Sanquin Blood Bank and supported by ZonMw, this product is designed to treat anemia of prematurity in infants born at less than 32 weeks of gestation. Unlike conventional allogeneic transfusions, this autologous product contains fetal hemoglobin (HbF), which has a higher oxygen affinity. It was evaluated in the PUCB (Premature Umbilical Cord Blood) randomized clinical trial to determine if it could reduce the need for donor blood and improve clinical outcomes in neonates.
