Overview

Autologous UCB Reinfusion is an investigational cell therapy involving the intravenous infusion of a pediatric patient's own umbilical cord blood (UCB) stem cells, which include hematopoietic and other progenitor cells collected at birth. Developed primarily by Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg at Duke University's Marcus Center for Cellular Cures, the therapy is investigated for its potential to treat spastic cerebral palsy. The proposed biological mechanism involves the cells' ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, reduce neuroinflammation, and facilitate neural repair and connectivity through paracrine signaling. A randomized, placebo-controlled Phase 2 trial demonstrated that children receiving a dose of at least 25 million cells/kg showed significant improvements in motor function and brain connectivity compared to placebo.
