Autologous umbilical cord blood transfusion is a biological therapy involving the collection of a neonate's own umbilical cord blood at birth, followed by its processing and re-infusion. The procedure involves separating the mononuclear cell layer for immediate transfusion (within 6 hours) and storing the red blood cell component for later transfusion to maintain hemoglobin levels above 10 g/dL. This approach is designed to treat and prevent complications of prematurity, including anemia of prematurity, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), by providing a rich source of autologous hematopoietic stem cells and red blood cells, thereby reducing the risks associated with allogeneic blood transfusions.
