Autologous urinary-derived epithelial cells are an experimental cell therapy being investigated for the treatment of corneal endothelial cell dysfunction. This condition is characterized by the loss or damage of corneal endothelial cells, which are essential for maintaining corneal dehydration and transparency; their failure leads to corneal edema, opacity, and potential blindness. The therapy involves harvesting epithelial cells from the patient's own urine, which are then processed and injected into the anterior chamber of the eye. By utilizing autologous cells, the treatment aims to restore the endothelial layer while minimizing the risk of immune rejection and reducing the dependency on donor corneal tissue, which is currently in short supply globally.
