This autologous tissue-engineered product is developed by Peking University First Hospital for the treatment of complex urethral strictures. The therapeutic approach involves harvesting urothelial cells from the patient (typically via bladder biopsy or urine), expanding them in vitro, and seeding them onto a scaffold composed of acellular dermal matrix (ADM). The ADM serves as a biocompatible, biodegradable framework that provides structural integrity and supports cell attachment and organization. Once the cells have populated the matrix, the construct is surgically implanted to reconstruct the damaged or narrowed segment of the urethra. This method aims to provide a functional replacement that mimics native tissue, reducing the risk of immunological rejection and donor site morbidity associated with traditional grafts like buccal mucosa.
