AutovaxID is an automated, computer-controlled bioreactor system and the associated personalized vaccine therapy developed by Biovest International for the treatment of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas, particularly follicular lymphoma. The system utilizes a hollow-fiber bioreactor to culture a patient's own tumor-derived hybridoma cells, which then secrete a unique immunoglobulin (idiotype) specific to that individual's cancer. This protein is purified and conjugated to the carrier protein keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) to create a therapeutic vaccine. The mechanism of action involves inducing a specific active immune response against the unique clonal determinants (idiotypes) present on the surface of the malignant B-cells. While a Phase 3 clinical trial for follicular lymphoma demonstrated a significant improvement in disease-free survival, the developer, Biovest International, faced substantial regulatory and financial challenges, leading to the eventual discontinuation of the program.
