Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AVA-003 (polyvantoin chlorine) is a novel, preclinical-stage chloramine-based antiseptic polymer developed by AvantGuard, a Cornell University spinout. Designed to mimic the natural immune response of neutrophils (which produce taurine chloramine), AVA-003 serves as a stable, slow-release delivery system for oxidative chlorine (hypochlorous acid) at high concentrations without the stability, corrosion, or irritation issues typical of conventional chlorinated biocides. It consists of an N-chloramine monomer (Avantamine) copolymerized with a sodium sulfonate functionalized acrylamide monomer. AVA-003 exerts broad-spectrum, resistance-proof antimicrobial and antifungal activity by selectively targeting and oxidizing negatively charged microbial cell walls, and it also disrupts fungal adhesion via surfactant activity. It is being developed in liquid and hydrogel formulations for universal skin decolonization and the treatment of skin, mucosal, and wound infections, including those caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens such as Candida auris (Candidozyma auris), MRSA, and ESKAPE bacteria, as well as dermatophytosis (ringworm) and diabetic foot ulcers.
