Overview

Avacincaptad pegol is a pegylated RNA aptamer that acts as a complement C5 inhibitor. It is indicated for the treatment of geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), an advanced form of dry AMD that leads to progressive and irreversible vision loss. By binding to and inhibiting complement factor C5, avacincaptad pegol blocks the cleavage of C5 into its active fragments (C5a and C5b), thereby reducing inflammation and slowing the progression of GA lesions in the retina. The drug is administered via intravitreal injection, typically every 28 days. Avacincaptad pegol was developed by Iveric Bio (now part of Astellas Pharma) and received FDA approval in August 2023 under the brand name Izervay[1][2][3][5][6][9].
