This combination drug consists of **avacincaptad pegol**, a complement C5 inhibitor, and **bevacizumab**, an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) monoclonal antibody. - Avacincaptad pegol acts by binding and inhibiting complement protein C5, thereby reducing the formation of membrane attack complexes and subsequent inflammation and cell lysis in the retina. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration[1][5]. - Bevacizumab is a recombinant monoclonal antibody that inhibits VEGF-A, thereby suppressing neovascularization and vascular permeability. It is widely used off-label (and under other brand/generic names) for neovascular age-related macular degeneration and other conditions with pathologic angiogenesis[3]. The combination may be used in clinical practice when patients present both geographic atrophy and neovascular (wet) AMD, or to address the risk of conversion to neovascular AMD during avacincaptad pegol therapy[1][2][3]. Both are administered intravitreally.
