Avasopasem manganese is a highly-selective small molecule mimetic of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD). It is designed to rapidly and selectively convert superoxide radicals to hydrogen peroxide and oxygen, thereby protecting normal tissues from damage caused by radiation therapy. The drug is being developed primarily for the reduction of severe oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy. It has also been investigated for potential use in reducing esophagitis associated with radiation therapy, as well as being tested against COVID-19. Avasopasem manganese acts as a radioprotector by mitigating oxidative stress-induced tissue injury during cancer treatment[1][2][3][5][6].
